Luckily, I have been privileged to travel to some amazing places over the past few years with my work. Unfortunately not all of the locations I have visited have been the most forgiving as far as equipment goes. Whether it be the harsh wind and rain of the North East of England (home), the intense heat of Zimbabwe or the sheer bitterness of the open glaziers of Iceland, its essential I have 100% faith in my chosen kit.
Of course, these conditions don’t tend to take any prisoners so I need to be sure that the equipment that I use in situations such as this are as robust and trustworthy as possible, which is why, on any big job I rely on my workhorse, the Canon 5D Mark III and also as the perfect no.2, its predecessor the Canon 5D Mark II which has served me well in the past. Both of which have taken their fair share of torment from the elements and my endeavour to catch that perfect shot.
That said, the above mentioned wouldn’t be the same without the addition of my trusted lenses, Canon 50mm f/1.2L (which was not pictured as it was the lens I used to shoot my kit shot as well as the Mark III) and the Canon 85mm f/1.2L. All of which are absolute essentials for the job. The look and feel of the images I capture through the use of these lenses are absolutely pivotal to the consistency of my work. The sharpness and quality you can achieve from these products are second to none even when used wide open. Not to mention the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II and the craft of the Carl Zeiss 50mm Makro – Planar f/2.0 ZE to call upon when necessary.
For the majority of my commercial work my process mainly consists of shooting tethered into my Apple Macbook Pro 15inch in conjunction with Capture One with a set of San Disk compact flash cards (when the elements don’t allow me to shoot tethered) a San Disc card reader and a few LaCie rugged external hard drives to complete the set. Better to be safe than sorry!
Last but not least, the good old Apple iPhone 5, a complete necessity for emails, weather forecast and of course all things social media related.
And finally…Business cards, sunglasses and most importantly my pad and pencil to make sure any bright ideas don’t get left behind. (All of which is usually packed into the Lowepro Pro Runner 450 AW Photo Backpack.)
