Learn photography, improve your photography, discover great gear, grow your business, get inspired – these are the goals I set out to accomplish when creating the Shotkit Book. There had to be something for everyone, from a seasoned pro right down to a newcomer to photography.
After a few months of work and the input of some of the world’s best photographers, I’ve finally managed to release the first edition of the Shotkit Book.
The Shotkit Book
This is the first time after more than a year that I’m offering a product for sale on Shotkit. Up until now, I’ve been striving to provide 100% free content on this site because I love producing it, and I get the impression you guys like it too!
The only thing I’ve ever asked for is your email address so I can send you the free Shotkit Newsletter :-)
I’m so grateful for the thank you emails I receive every week from Shotkit fans around the world who have been inspired by all the excellent photographers and sexy camera gear on this site. It means a lot to me and to all the photographers involved that you are being inspired to improve your photography and grow your business.
To tell the truth, I feel a little uncomfortable about promoting something that has a price tag to you guys since everything up until now has been free.
Having said that, I do have bills to pay too, and every cent from the sale of the Shotkit Book is reinvested back into the Shotkit site, paying for my servers, emails, contributors and time.
For these reasons, I’d be truly grateful if you would consider purchasing a copy of the Shotkit Book, or at least tell all your friends about it! (Use the share buttons at the top/end of the post.)
30+ World Class Photographers
I think you’ll enjoy being able to browse photographers and their work on your devices offline, in a clean reading experience, devoid of ads and other distractions.
Then there’s another thing that I think you’re going to like a lot…
Six Tips for Shotkit
As well as the 30+ photographers featured in the Shotkit Book, I’m also introducing a brand new video interview series which I’ve called Six Tips for Shotkit.
I wanted to interview world-class photographers and experts in certain industries, and come away with actionable tips for you guys to use straight away to improve your photography and grow your photography business.
With Six Tips for Shotkit, you’ll be left with an awesome set of tips you can implement straight away.
It’s a mixture of technical and non-technical info that I’m really confident you’re going to love. Here’s what you can expect:
Improve your Wedding Photography
Wedding Photography is without a doubt the most popular genre on Shotkit. We already feature a good number of the world’s best wedding photographers, and with the Six Tips series, I intend to delve much deeper into this popular genre.
I caught Lindsay and Daniel’s talk at Mystic Seminars 2015 and was inspired by their energy, passion and knowledge. I’m so happy they are involved in this informative and fun video.
I don’t want to give away too much, but it’s 45 minutes worth of awesome material (yes, ‘6’ tips usually means a few more tips than that)!
One stand out tip for me was a trick to help you out in a situation where you have a subject and a completely uninspiring location, and only a few minutes to get a photo of something amazing. We’ve all been there, and I think this tip to create something like the photo below will blow you away!
Lindsay and Daniel Stark are great teachers as well as great photographers, so I recommend you check out their Six Tips for Shotkit in the Shotkit Book .
Grow your Instagram
Needless to say, I was a little oblivious to the huge potential of Instagram.
As you are no doubt well aware, Instagram is excellent for both enjoyment and for business. Whilst the reach of Facebook dwindles every day, Instagram engagement figures are still mind blowing.
I don’t need to tell you how important it is to grow your Instagram following, but perhaps something you didn’t know is that there are photographers out there making a living using Instagram, and booking their clients almost entirely via this one social media platform.
Robert J Hill is one of them. At last count, he has over 28,200 Instagram followers who are engaged and actively following his work. What’s more, he books weddings around the world solely via his Instagram presence.
Robert is meticulous about what he shares and how he does it, resulting in an enormous following that he’s accumulated in less than 2 years.
This guy is an Instagram beast, and I’m so happy we spent 45 minutes discussing his Six Tips for Shotkit on growing your Instagram.
Be sure to check it out in the Shotkit Book.
Improve your Photojournalism
I thought long and hard about the title for this video. Kirsten Lewis is best known for her family portraiture, which is at once both quirky and touching. She has also won numerous awards for her fantastic wedding photography.
In this Six Tips for Shotkit, Kirsten Lewis and I discuss both her wedding and family work (for 45 minutes again!), but it’s much more than that.
You’ll soon see that Kirsten is great with people, and dealing with people in order to get the very best out of them to produce a photo that most other photographers would have missed.
She’s an expert at integrating into her surroundings by becoming a fly on the wall, but at the same time being in total control of the situation, ready to react and capture every fleeting moment.
What’s even more amazing is that Kirsten spends entire weekends living with her clients at their homes. It’s interesting to hear why she chooses to do this, and how she justifies the huge investment of her time and energy.
This video will be like gold dust to anyone who wants to get the best out of children for their photography. Kirsten is a child psychology major, so knows a thing or two about how to handle children!
Even more than this though, you’ll learn about true photojournalism from this video – the art of remaining invisible and documenting real moments, and doing everything it takes to be in the right place at the right time.
There’s a lot of great information in this video that goes much deeper than camera settings and gear (although we do cover that of course). I really recommend you check it out in the Shotkit Book.
