My name is Benj Haisch and I’m a Seattle-based wedding photographer shooting in destinations all over the world. Photographing in India and throughout Europe right after college got me hooked on photography and I’ve been photographing weddings specifically ever since a wedding photographer bailed on someone last minute and was brave enough to call me to give it a shot.
Through my years as a photographer, my one anchor for gear has been a 5D series and my 35L. I’ve been through all three 5D bodies and my 35L has really helped me in developing my style by forcing me to engage more closely with my subjects. Partnering the Canon 35mm f/1.4 with the Canon 85mm f/1.2 has been perfect for me, and that combination is on my cameras about 90% of the time. I shoot with a Holdfast Moneymaker, so two camera bodies are on me at all times.
Recently I’ve been trying out the Fujifilm X-Pro1 as a smaller, lighter, and more inconspicuous camera for times like getting ready and cocktail hours, when guests might be a little more weary of a DSLR in their face, but other than a switch in the 5D bodies, I’ve shot the same focal lengths for the past 5 years. It’s also become my go-to camera for when I want to shoot some personal work, but I don’t want things to feel like work.
Along with that, I’ve been spending a lot of time photographing with my iPhone over the past year. I shoot 5-10 iPhone images at every wedding, process them in VSCOcam and email them to the couple that night. It’s an awesome way to tide them over until the DSLR photos are ready.
