Hi I’m Bronte from @frombeewithlove and I love photographing myself in unusual, colourful places with a bookish twist.

I started getting interested in photography in my second year of university when I found the ‘Bookstagram’ community on Instagram. Two years later I’m blessed enough to be doing it full time!

I’ve kept my gear pretty simple over the years. When I first started doing Instagram photography, all I has was my iPhone 6 and that was it.

When I decided that I wanted to enhance my editing skills, I bought my very first DSLR.

Camera:

Canon EOS 200D: I chose this camera after a lot of research on YouTube. I’ve had this camera for just over a year and I still love it. It’s a starter DSLR, but I don’t feel the need to upgrade just yet. It’s very small and lightweight, which is perfect for me because I carry it around all the time.

Lenses:

Canon EFS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6: This was my starter lens that came with the camera body. It’s a great little lens that’s perfect for portraits or ‘person-focused photography’ (where you don’t necessarily want the background of the image to be the focus of the photo).

It’s also very small and light, so is great for street photography if you don’t want something super wide.

Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L: I decided I needed a lens upgrade when I wanted to incorporate more travel photography into my photos. For that, I wanted a wider lens so I could get more of the background in my shots. And boy, can you get wiiiiiide with this thing!

I pretty much use this lens all of the time now, the only exception being when wide angles don’t necessarily work that well, such as at home lifestyle shots. For those, I switch back to my 18-55mm lens.

That is the kit I use on a regular basis. I do have a tripod, but I rarely use it and often ask someone else to take the photo for me once I set up the angle I want – it’s a lot less lonely that way!

I have a very basic camera bag, but it’s definitely nothing to shout about – it just gets the job done!

I like to keep my kit super simple as I don’t have a huge budget. I don’t feel the need to upgrade anything yet as I’m perfectly happy with what I have.

I also don’t like having a lot of kit with me when I’m going to take photographs as I’m already carrying so many different props!

Editing:

Lightroom: Lightroom is where I do the main bulk of my editing. That’s where I apply my presets and really make the photos pop – a good filter can make all the difference!

I like to switch up my editing styles as the seasons change. For example, in summer I stick with lighter, cleaner editing style and in the autumn/winter months I go a bit richer with my colours and darker to suit the seasons.

Editing is probably what I love most about photography.

Photoshop: I will sometimes use photoshop to add a bit more magic to my photos! This can be anything from making myself fly to getting rid of something in a photo that throws the symmetry off balance.

I think the most important advice I can give for anyone who wants to get into photography is start with what you already have. iPhone cameras are pretty good these days, and I would only invest in a camera when you’ve become comfortable with phone photography.

Starting with what you have and working your way up is a great way to figure out what you like about photography, and saves you from getting kit that you don’t need.
