Inside My Bag | Farwood Photography

Heya! I’m Ant from Farwood Photography and I live with my wedding stationery designer wife, Harriet, in the middle of nowhere, near Dartmoor, in the UK. I’ve been photographing weddings for just over three years. I love to focus on the moments and the story to be told throughout a wedding day.

I got into photography during my time working for the BBC on shows like Countryfile and Springwatch. Then, in September 2016, I was asked to second shoot a wedding and fell head over heels in love.

I work hard to be an almost invisible part of the day so that I can photograph people just enjoying themselves. That often starts with helping people tie their ties and ends with being right in the middle of the dance floor!

With that in mind, I’ve chosen to shoot on a fully mirrorless setup and ultimately ended up with the wonderful (if at times quirky) Fuji X-T3 system.

My first ever wedding (second shooting in 2016) was on a Canon 550D. Not the ideal setup! This lead me to find what works for me and the lures of a silent electronic shutter, low weight, and sumptuous colour recreation lead me to Fuji.

My first two years were shot on two Fuji X-T2s and the wonderful Fuji X-series of lenses. In the summer of 2019, I switched up the Fuji X-T3 and that’s when I found the slight flaws in the Fuji X-T2 system just fell away. The kit I’ve assembled now feels like the perfect fit for my shooting and editing style.

I shoot my weddings almost exclusively on the Fuji 16mm f/1.4 (review) and the Fuji 56mm f/1.2 lenses. Shooting on an APS-C camera, this means I basically shoot at 24mm and 85mm all day. This always used to be tricky when it came to the dance floor but, since jumping up to the Fuji X-T3, the improved autofocus and low-light performance really make the whole system sing.

I shoot my dance floor shots up close and personal, whilst using a Yongnuo YN560 IV Speedlite on each X-T3. I also mount a MagMod MagSphere on the flash attached to my 16mm which gives me a wonderful fill even if there’s no ceiling in proximity to bounce off.

I sling my cameras from a leather holster system I got from Etsy. It always gets some good comments and putting it on always feels like those getting-suited-up moments in a comic book movie…

I carry all my kit in a wonderfully reliable bag – the Think Tank Perception Pro. It’s compact yet magically fits in everything I need for a day that can often involve numerous location changes. This is often where the emergency Lucozade and Trebor Extra Strong mints are stashed before being devoured before the late night dancing!
