The best way for me to enjoy a wedding, is to get real creative with it! I have found, over the years, that the less gear I bring, the more creative I get!
It almost forces me to be more creative when I don’t have many options (like I use to). Instead of turning to my gear to make shots awesome, I turn to my surroundings and angles instead! The right angle makes all the difference in the world when taking a great shot and sometimes gear just slows you down!
Here is a list of my gear and how use it! Thanks for being interested ;)
• My ThinkTank Airport Take-Off has been through every wedding with me! I arrive to the wedding with this bag and pretty much never touch it again the entire day, unless I need a spare or I run out of batteries. It’s more of a transport for me then anything else.
• My ONA Leather Prince street bag is what I carry with me all day! It always has 2 lenses and a flash in it, along with extra batteries, remotes and SD cards. I love that it stays open so I can switch lenses real fast! It also look real cool, but it can get heavy by the end of the night.
• I have 2 Nikon D750’s, but I only shoot with one all day. I tried a 2 camera set-up, but it’s not for me. I have a simple camera strap that allows me to get on the ground and get the angle I need faster than using a 2 camera system and speed is the most important thing to me at a wedding. My 2nd camera is just back-up.
• My lenses are the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 which I use for 2-8 wide shots through out the day, the Sigma Art 35mm f/1.4, which is on my camera 50% of the time and the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII which is on my camera the other 50% of the time. I also have a Nikon 105mm f/2.8 Macro that I use for the rings shots.
• I use a Nikon SB-910 flash for my receptions (on camera) and I use 2 Yongnuo 560 III flashes with the YN-603N remotes for all of my off camera flash. I can’t recommend those Yongnuo flashes and remotes enough…. they are awesome!! and cheap ;)
• My Paul C Buff, Einstein studio light is mainly used for family shots with a soft white umbrella. I will also bring it out on sunny days when I need to balance my light with the sun. It’s such a powerful, versatile and small flash!!
• My Westcott Micro Apollo goes on my speed lights for any off camera flash I do and it also fits over the cone of my Einstein in a pinch!
• I love (and my assistants love) my SIRUI P-326 Carbon Fiber Monopod! It’s around $95 and great for any off camera flash use! Plus it gives my assistant something to hold all day.
• My Dolica Proline Tripod is cheap, but it gets the job done, it’s light weight and folds up pretty small. I use it for all of my light painting.
• The orange flashlight is from walmart and it works great for running around at night, light painting (guide) or just finding your gear in dark places!
• Think Tank Battery Holders and Think Tank Pixel Pocket Rocket SD card holders are simply the best!
• And I don’t shoot a single wedding without my sweat bands! I once had a camera die on me, because sweat got into the camera and that will never happen again! Wear two and have spares!
