Hello! I’m Katrina Yu, an Asia-based fine art photographer and digital artist. My work revolves heavily in creating imaginary worlds through photographs.

I love the idea of being able to create stories out of the ordinary. I have been creating imaginary worlds through my personal everyday-project on Instagram. It’s a self-portraiture project where I create the realities I want to experience.

My Shotkit is relatively light-weight. I find that it’s not about having the latest gear but what you do with what you have. So as long as it can produce the vision in mind, I’m okay with the tools I own.

My mantra is “It needs to be something I can carry”. I would travel to scout and shoot landscapes as stock so everything has to fit in my camera bag.

I’m using:

Nikon D750 as my camera body. It has been with me since 2015. The lenses that I use are the Sigma 35mm f/1.4, Sigma 50mm f/1.4 for portrait work, and the Sigma 24-105mm f/4 for those landscapes.

For my self-portraiture, I use the Yongnuo YP860 RX II Remote Trigger with the Vanguard Alta Pro 2+ 264AT Aluminum Tripod with the Vanguard Alta GH-100 Pistol Grip Ball Head for precise control of those angles.

I would also sometimes use my iPhone X to shoot whenever I don’t have my camera with me.

I have a Mac Book Pro 15” and Wacom Intuous Pro for editing.

I truly believe that we need to have the imagination first so that we can fully utilize the tools that we have. Just start with what you have, use it in its entirety and see what it does and what these limits will force you to create.
