Luiz C. Ribeiro

Photojournalism | Last Updated: April 4, 2024

My name is Luiz C. Ribeiro and I’m a full time professional photographer based in the New York City area. I was born in Diamantina, Brazil, and due to the dearth of opportunities and financial hardships my family and I faced, I began working at aged 16.

Around 18 I had saved up some money to buy my first camera – an Olympus Trip 35. This first camera was undoubtedly memorable. I didn’t know it or see it yet, but my life was about to change. I took my camera everywhere, especially while travelling in Brazil. It was amongst those first pictures that my love for photography was born. I had fallen in love.

In 1986 Brazil inflation was rampant, consequently leading to my move to New York. It was on that long flight, where my dream to pursue a career in photography came to conscience. I was 25 years old. Call it luck, hard work, perhaps my resolve, or just simply divine intervention, in 1993, 6 years after arriving in the US, I was hired by the New York Post as a Staff Photographer.

I had the extraordinary opportunity to work at the New York Post from 1993 to 2012, yet after 20 years at the Post, I decided to take my work experience to new heights.

As a photographer, I never take short cuts. When I travel on assignment, I normally carry all my prime lenses and at least two zooms.

Currently I’m a freelance photographer (guide) with AP Images, Invision Photo Agency and Folha Press (Brazil) and regularly I work for various non-profit organisations.

As a professional photographer with over twenty years of hands-on experience in news, commercial, fashion, sports, portraiture, nature photography, I believe that I have the mettle that is needed in a photographer to provide unique work.

A photographer’s job is much more than taking just pictures and I understand this quite well. I have an inherent ability to realize and capture compositions to show the world what the naked eye can sometimes not see. From fashion photography to capturing the beautiful world that nature has given to man, I have done it all. I understand that a photographer nowadays needs to have a technical hold on things. I am comfortable operating photography equipment and related software that are used to process quality photographs in this day and age.

My photos have appeared in nearly every major national and international publication including USA Today, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, US News & World Report, Time Magazine, Newsweek, Exame, Veja, Folha de São Paulo, books and many other publications.

I’m a member of the National Press Photographer Association – NPPA, The White House News Photographers Association – WHNPA, The New York Press Photographers Association – NYPPA, Associação de Reporters Fotograficos – ARFOC – Minas Gerais (Brazil) and Federação Nacional dos Jornalistas – FENAJ – (Brazil).
