Hi, I’m Matteo, a documentary wedding photographer.
I started photography as an amateur in 2011 when I decided to begin a photographic project: one photograph every day for a year; 365 shots including portraits, street photography and still life.
I immediately understood that documentary photography is what I prefer. It’s the style that represents me the most, perhaps because I am an extremely introverted person and I love taking pictures behind the scenes.
I made the decision to start professionally in 2014 for a personal need.
My wife has always said that she noticed my total disinterest in university studies compared to the passion and dedication with which I dedicated myself to photography. She encouraged me to try, and the arrival of our son led me to literally make a leap into the dark.
Initially, I did only one wedding as a second photographer. I had no material to show and it was really difficult to start.
I did several jobs to not give up and I must say that I am extremely lucky and proud! It is really a great fortune to be able to follow your passions and transform them into your work.
In recent years, thanks also to several workshops by photographers that I respect and admire so much, I realized that it is essential to show what represents us.
My clients know that during the wedding day I will be aside in silence, without organizing moments.
I will not touch anything, even when there are many disturbing elements in my frame because I know that for me it will be a gym – trying to find the best in every situation is very important.
Even in postproduction, I choose to leave everything as it is – no Photoshop or image distortions.
The thing I love most about weddings is to tell different stories every time because a marriage is never the same. Each story is different: every connection between people, their gestures, their way of smiling, embracing, having fun and playing is different.
I am attracted by moments of emotion. Being a husband and a father of two beautiful children, many times I find myself taking moments that I experience every day; especially the moment of play between children and parents or hugs and kisses between couples.
My gear for shooting a wedding is the following:
Nikon D5: The performance of this camera is simply outstanding. Autofocus, high ISO, FPS, the quality of the raw files and so on. I use it always with my Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art. On the dancefloor, this is a pure beast. It doesn’t miss a shot.
Nikon D850: I’ll be honest, I do not have a REAL main or secondary camera. I use both depending on the given situation. Usually, the Nikon 85mm f/1.8 is mounted on this camera.
Nikkor 20mm f/1.8: This is my favorite lens for the dancefloor. Wide, fast and light.
Godox Flash V1: I am not a fan of flashes but when it comes to the wedding party I need a super flash that keeps up with the burst of my Nikon D5. This flash is simply outstanding! High capabilities, the power is always constant and never lowers its intensity.
Godox V860II: As always, flashes for me are for dancing purposes only. Usually I put this flash on a clamp and I connect it wirelessly with my Nikon D850, which generally has the Nikon 85mm f/1.8 G mounted, to achieve some backlight photographs.
Godox X-pro N: The range of this wireless trigger is incredible! It has no lag and it’s powerful.
Leather camera straps: Essential for my work with two cameras! I asked an artisan in Tuscany to handcraft this for me. Incredible quality and comfort.
