Lens maker Tokina has unveiled a new super-wide-angle zoom lens for mirrorless cameras, but with a particular emphasis on Sony’s E-Mount APS-C devices. The lens, called the atx-m 11-18mm f/2.8 E, offers a 17-27mm full-frame 35mm equivalent focal length when used with APS-C camera models and an aperture range of f/2.8 to f/22 through its nine-bladed aperture diaphragm.
Tokina has designed the atx-m with what it considers a compact body and a lightweight build. They also kept in mind support for both photo and video shooting. On the inside, the atx-m 11-18mm f/2.8 E has been assembled from 13 elements in 11 groups. Of the elements, two are aspherical and two offer super-low dispersion glass that according to Tokina powerfully suppresses chromatic aberrations.
Moreover, Tokina claims that the “superb” optics of its new device render rich color reproduction with minimal distortion and low light falloff. Additionally, according to the brand, the atx-m 11-18mm f/2.8 E delivers superb resolving power from its wide end to its long end and delivers high contrast. Its autofocus response time is also “quick and precise” for both still photo capture and video recording needs because of a lens stepping motor (STM) inside the optic.
The atx-m 11-18mm f/2.8 E is completely compatible with Sony’s E-Mount APS-C cameras in all regards, which includes their image stabilization technology, direct manual focus, eye autofocus, optical correction settings and direct manual focus as well.
This video from Tokina offers an overview of the camera.
This lens can even be used for macro photography to a certain degree thanks to its 0.19-meter minimal focusing distance and the macro ratio of 1:9.2, allowing for wide-angle macro images with a unique effect. The atx-m 11-18mm f/2.8 E’s front filter size is 67mm and the body includes a USB Type B port for firmware updates.
What’s this lens particularly useful for? Well according to Tokina, it’s ideally suited for landscape shooting, photos of people, environment shots and architecture photography. It can also be used for street photos, macro shooting to a certain degree, and for documentary video recording. In general terms, the atx-m 11-18mm f/2.8 E is a good piece of glass for any shooting context in which users need a wide angle of view.
A few photos below from Tokina’s website show off the performance qualities of the lens. The Tokina atx-m 11-18mm f/2.8 E goes on sale as of September 16th for a pretty reasonable suggested retail price of $699.
