Dell’s new 6K monitor with IPS Black Promises superb photo editing specs

Following Samsung’s release of a supposedly superb new photo and graphic editing monitor with incredible color accuracy, Dell has done something similar.

The new UltraSharp 32 6K (U3224KB) monitor from the brand promises superb sharpness, crisp detail and extremely good color accuracy to a degree that people interested in serious photo editing might like.

Importantly, the monitor also offers a new development called IPS Black Technology, for extremely high contrast and deep black tones.

IPS (In-Plane Switching) monitors generally offer particularly superb color rendering and good viewing angles, but the quality of their black has always been less than that offered by many alternatives due to something called IPS glow.

The new UltraSharp apparently solves this with its Black Technology. IPS Black Tech was originally developed by LG and that brand offered claims of up to 35% superior black-level performance for the feature. This translates to twice the contrast ratio of ordinary IPS screens, according to LG.

Dell has also claimed that its version of IPS Black Technology creates 41% deeper black levels compared to the 35% promised by LG with its original development of the same tech.

For truly perfect black levels and perfect infinite contrast, buyers can also always choose OLED panel technology.

However, for photo and graphic editors who want black and contrast quality at a more affordable price without sacrificing on color quality at the same time, the new IPS Black Tech could be a solution.

The new Dell UltraSharp 6K 32-inch display isn’t the first from Dell to feature this either. In 2022, the company released 27 and 32-inch 4K UltraSharp screens that also had IPS Black Tech. The latest model offers all that superior 6K resolution though.

In terms of other key specs, the UltraSharp 32 6K promises quite a bit too. According to Dell, it supports a hefty 99% of the extremely broad DCI-P3 color gamut range and also renders 100% of the sRGB and Rec. 709 color gamuts.

Overall, Dell claims that the monitor can accurately render a range of 1.07 billion colors.

The UltraSharp 6K is also quite bright with a VESA DisplayHDR 600 rating which means 600 nits of peak brightness that combine with its color and contrast specs for strong HDR performance.

Then there’s its 6K resolution of 6,144 x 3,456 pixels across a broad 32-inch display space. These two features make this screen ideal for extremely fine-tuned photo editing and retouching.

According to Dell, “With 150% more pixels on 6K resolution compared to 4K, the new UltraSharp 32 6K Monitor brings extra details and additional clarity to your data sets and graphics,”

The company also reminds potential users, “The inclusion of IPS Black technology means an increase in depth for dark objects — even in dark environments — and accurate colors viewed from virtually every angle.”

The new UltraSharp 32 6K Monitor is heavy on connectivity features too. It can be hooked up to two different video sources through both Thunderbolt 4 and DisplayPort 2.1 ports

It can then display both video sources from these respective ports at the same time through its Picture-in-Picture and Picture-by-Picture settings. Video editors should find this handy for playing around with.

The 6K UltraSharp’s other connectivity features include an HDMI 2.1 port, a mini DisplayPort 2.1 and dual USB-C ports. It also has a second Thunderbolt 4 port with 140-watt power connectivity) and a couple of USB-A ports.

Another notable aspect of the new UltraSharp is a very large, very serious-looking video conferencing camera that bulges out along its top. This device offers 4K HDR video quality through a multi-element lens that renders “crystal clear” visuals according to Dell.

The camera’s FOV can also be adjusted to 65, 78 and 90 degrees while tilt can be changed from 0 to 20 degrees.

The monitor comes with two reasonably decent 14W speakers and will be available for orders between April and June of this year. Dell hasn’t named a price yet.
