Meet Sigma’s Three New Telephoto Lens Patents

News | By Stephan Jukic | January 16, 2023

The popular lens brand Sigma has unveiled several new telephoto lens patents ranging from 400mm to a hefty 700mm.

Sigma, which has spent the last few years focusing more on optics with more compact focal lengths of 20mm to 135mm is now apparently expanding its vista to include heavy-duty telephoto shooting.

The three most recent patents being created by the brand consist of a 400mm f/5 OS (Optical Stabilizer) lens, a 500mm f/5.6 OS model, and an exceptionally hefty 700mm f/8 OS piece of optical photographic equipment.

Sigma also has a fair bit of previous experience with building lenses like these in both prime and zoom variants.

Previously, the brand released a 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sports lens and a 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports model.

Another particularly extreme previous release by Sigma was its so-called “Sigmonster”, a 300 mm-800 mm f/5.6 EX DG HSM lens model, along with others such as a 200-500mm f/2.8 EX DG. This latter is the only lens by the brand with a 500mm focal length and such an aperture.

Now, what we need to note here is that none of the newly patented lenses mentioned above are yet actual consumer market releases. Specifically, they’re new patents for lenses, that may or may not enter commercial production.

With that said, narrow-aperture telephoto lenses have been getting more popular in recent years and there’s little doubt that Sigma will soon produce at least some of these new developments.

Lenses like Sigma’s creations not only let photographers explore interesting new focal lengths at more affordable prices, but they also combine well with modern mirrorless cameras for superior performance.

With more camera models than ever emerging with excellent ISO and AF along with other tech like internal image stabilization, lenses such as these Sigma patents and others could have something of a continuing renaissance in the world of specialized photography.
