Only These 20 Lenses Can Handle the Full 40.2 MP of the Fujifilm X-H2 Sensor
With the recent release of the Fujifilm X-H2 Camera, the brand revealed an APS-C sensor that sets new standards for the industry. With an extraordinarily large 40.2MP resolution, the sensor on this latest Fujifilm model is the largest of its kind on the market. It beats its closest rival with the same sensor format, the 32.5MP Canon EOS R7, by a wide margin and this has caused some understandable excitement for what future camera specs competition will create.
However, the sheer size of the X-H2’s sensor can create its own unique problem for users with existing Fujifilm lenses for APS-C cameras.
The devil in the details is that not just any lens from the brand’s lineup can resolve the full detail level that the camera’s sensor is capable of taking in. Many will instead crop it down, causing obvious possible frustrations for anyone who actually bought the camera for its resolution.
Specifically, only 20 of Fujifilm’s existing lens models are capable of fully complementing the 40.2MP X-H2 to give a photographer photos in complete, unreduced detail. Fortunately, Fujifilm has taken this into consideration and (via fujirumors) revealed a list of all of them to avoid user complaints. Here they are.
- Fujinon XF 16mm f/2.8 R WR

A key thing to keep in mind with these lenses is that it does NOT mean unlisted Fujifilm XF format glass won’t give a superior performance with the X-H2. Even lenses that can’t take full advantage of the whole 40.2MP will still outdo the image resolution they could manage with previous Fujifilm 26MP APS-C sensor technology. However, they might only resolve 30, or ,32 or 35MP of the total 40 available.
Curiously, for first-time X-H2 buyers, the very kit lens it comes packaged with actually ISN’T one of the above models. That’s right, Fujifilm will sell you the wonderful X-H2 with the huge sensor they’ve shown off so much, but without the ability to fully use its power right out of the box.
