I’m Pedro, a documentary photographer. Some years ago, I embarked on a road of no return: photography. I started working as a photojournalist in the local newspaper in my city, where I learned the importance of deciding if you go fishing or hunting, if you wait for your prey or if you put a bait on it to fall into your clutches. I am a “photos fisherman”. I work as a documentary photographer in all areas, from personal stories reports to wedding photography.
My equipment is becoming more and more simple, and especially light. I now work with two Nikon D600, which I think is the best camera out, not as heavy as the Nikon D4 or with files as big as Nikon D800. Working using light and comfortable equipment allows me to work more at ease. This camera’s ISO is brutal – I don’t need anything else, and the focus, if it is well set, is fast and sensitive for use in continuous shots.
I always carry two cameras with me, one with the Nikon 85mm f/1.8 lens, faster focused than the Nikon 85mm f/1.4 and especially lighter, and another with a Sigma 35mm f/1.4, cheaper than the equivalent Nikon, and, in my opinion, with a more complete performance.
In my workflow, I usually use a flash unit separate from the camera, a Nikon SB-910 that I shoot with PocketWizard Plus III in manual mode. In photos in which the couple are too far away, I use a third Pocket Wizard in RP mode, to amplify the signal.
Right now, in my determination to work with the lightest possible equipment, I am trying the Fujifilm X-T1, with the Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 and with Fujifilm 18mm f/2, and it is really amazing equipment. I’m thinking of jumping ship from Nikon to Fuji… Just saying.
The little Rollei 35 is just a hobby. It comes with a black and white Kodak Tri-x 400 and I usually take one or two photos in each wedding. But that’s another project and will be told another time….
