The Insta360 X4 Includes 8K Video & Many Heavy-Duty Features

News | By Stephan Jukic | April 19, 2024

Insta360 recently announced the release of its latest and possibly best action camera, the Insta360 X4, and it really delivers on features.

This newest little camera from this increasingly popular brand offers 8K 360° footage, a heavily expanded battery life, new frame rates, new resolution options and a bunch of other specs.

Action camera maker Insta360 has already previously pushed out some very robust little action cameras over the years with models like the Insta360 ONE RS 1-inch 360 Edition and the X4’s predecessor, the Insta360 X3.

Now with the X4, this brand has really packed on the technology to a whole new level.

Video Recording Features Galore

Starting with the 8K 360° video: the new camera offers this at a specific resolution of 7680×3840 pixels at 30, 25 and 24fps.

Moving down from there, you can also use the X4 to shoot video in the following resolutions while in 360° mode:

  • 5.7K+: 5760×2880@30 / 25/ 24fps
  • 5.7K: 5760×2880@60 /50 /30 /25 / 24fps
  • 4K: 3840×1920@100 / 60/ 50 / 30 / 25 / 24fps

However, the Insta360 X4 also has two other video recording modes. These are Single-Lens Mode and Me Mode.

In these settings, it doesn’t let users shoot video in 8K or 5.7K but the available options are still excellent. Respectively, they’re as follows:

Single-Lens Mode:

  • 4K: 3840×2160 @60 / 50 / 30 / 25 / 24fps
  • 2.7K: 2720×1536@60 / 50 / 30 / 25 / 24fps
  • 1080p: 1920×1080@60 / 50 / 30 / 25 / 24fps

Me Mode:

  • 4K: 3840×2160@30 / 25 / 24fps
  • 2.7K: 2720×1536@120 / 100 / 60 / 50fps
  • 1080p: 1920×1080@120 / 100 / 60 / 50fps

The X4 also has a reframing option that lets a user record a video segment in its full 8K 360-degree mode and then go back through the footage to select any specific angles they want to cut out as cropped video segments.

Given the 8K resolution video these segments are taken from, their quality is still pretty damn sharp.

The camera’s 5.7K/60fps setting in 360° mode is also interesting because it lets you capture especially smooth action video at a great resolution, which makes it particularly useful for fast-paced action that won’t translate as nicely in 8K at 30fps.

Also, with The ability to shoot 4K video at 100fps in 360° mode, the camera is ideal for high-quality slow-motion video at a reliably crisp resolution.

The video shooting modes for the above camera modes in the Insta360 X4 are also pretty cool and versatile.

These include Video, Timelapse, TimeShift, Bullet Time, Loop Recording, Active HDR, and Pre-recording modes.

You can also upgrade to a Bullet Time slow-mo mode that allows 5.7K at 120fps and 3K at a whopping 240fps. Moreover, there’s an available upgrade to 8K TimeShift mode for hyperlapse video in 8K resolution.

Insta360 has also given the X4 several native options for controlling your video shooting.

One of these is Gesture Control, which lets you use hand gestures to record and change recording settings. Another is Voice Control 2.0, which works with, as you might guess, voice commands.

There’s also a Timed Capture mode for scheduling when the camera powers up, starts recording at a pre-arranged setting, and then powers back off.

Beefier Body, But Better Battery

To handle all of these video modes and resolutions, the Insta360 X4 has been bulked up and outfitted with a more powerful battery than its predecessor had.

This camera is sized at 46×123.6×37.6mm or 1.81×4.86×1.48 inches and has a fairly hefty weight of 203 grams or 7.16 ounces.

Despite this, it remains fairly compact and one major benefit of the larger size is a beefier 2290 mAh battery that delivers 67% more running time than that of the X3.

This translates to an average running time of 135 minutes of continuous use if you’re shooting at 5.7K and 30fps. For 8K recording at the maximum of 30fps, battery life per use drops to 75 minutes.

A Pile Of Other Features and Tough Build Specs

Other new features of the Insta360 X4 include the following:

  • A Removable Standard lens guard that comes with the camera. You can also spend extra on a scratch-resistant, tempered-glass Premium version of the same.
  • A 2.5″ Corning® Gorilla Glass® Touchscreen
  • FlowState Stabilization & 360° Horizon Lock
  • Waterproofing down to 10m or 33ft. A separately sold Invisible Dive Case lets you increase this to 49.99m or 164ft.
  • Cold-weather resistance to temperatures as low as -4° Fahrenheit or -20° Celsius – and heat resistance up to 104°F or 40° Celsius.

Finally, the Insta360 X4 features Bluetooth BLE 5.2 connectivity, WiFi 5G and a single USB-C port. It also has a 2.5-inch fixed LCD touchscreen and one slot for a single microSD/microSDHC card up to a maximum space of 1 TB.

You can get your own Insta360 X4 edition now at a fairly decent price of $499.99 either from the company’s website or through authorized sellers. The X4 costs $100 more than its predecessor but absolutely beats it on performance and specs.
