Hello, my name is Demas Rusli (@demasrusli on Instagram) and I am a 24-year-old architectural graduateĀ (at FJMT Studio), and a hobbyist photographer and content creator. I have been using Instagram for about 2-3 years now to showcase my photography, but it has only been since going to my very first ‘Instameet’ in March 2015 that I have taken it a little bit more seriously.
Through Instagram, I have been able to meet so many awesome like-minded people and these people have inspired me to explore more and become more creative in my own content.
Since I am an architectural graduate, I am drawn towards urban photography (I also do love exploring nature and landscapes too), geometry, and placing people as a scale reference to the spaces I take photos of.
I also love to play around on Adobe Photoshop to come up with creative composites to convey ideas that are physically impossible to create from a single photograph. I have been using Photoshop for about 7 years now (thanks to studying architecture!) so I would say I am quite efficient at it.
I used to shoot with a Canon 1100D for about 3 years until I made the switch to a Sony A7ii
(because of its compactness and full-frame sensor). I generally like to shoot wide-angle, so the lenses I mostly use are the Sony FE 28mm f/2
with the Sony 21mm f/2.8
Ā ultra-wide angle converter, and the Samyang 14mm f/2.8
.
I also still have a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 lens from back in my Canon days that I use with a Viltrox Adapter
when I need extra reach, and I also recently got the Sony FE 55mm f/1.8
lens as I want to try a bit more street/portrait photography.
As I work full time, I mainly shoot at night so having lenses that have a higher aperture and a good sturdy tripod are important gear that I always carry around. Luckily the Sony A7ii has great low light performance and a in-built image stabiliser which means that I can shoot at 0.5-0.8 seconds handheld.
Other gear:
Adidas NMD Runner Primeknit: I am a big sneaker-head and shoe collector, so whenever I go out shooting I always wear these sneakers just in case I can get a cool leg shot!
Mouse: Logitech M705 mouse, a great all round mouse for editing photos with.
Mammut Headtorch: Torches are always handy when you go out shooting a lot at night (not only just to provide light, but also to do some light painting photography too!)
I-nergy Portable Battery: One of the most useful things in my bag, for when my phone or my camera battery dies during longer days.
Notebook and pens: I sometimes like to draw / write out photography ideas for brands or different locations. Always good to write down your thoughts so you don’t forget it later!
iPod Nano: My go-to music player.
Wide-angle lenses / clip for Samsung S6: These lenses are sometimes handy when I only have my phone on me.
Recently, I have started hosting night Instameets with my friends Gareth (@nightsandlights), Jr (@jrhigz_) and Eric (@thefeaturedgentleman) around Sydney (#sydneynightsquad, #sydneynightsquad2, and #sydneynightsquad3).
They’veĀ been a big success with more than 100 people attending these photo-walks in the Sydney CBD. We have started a new Instagram account called @globalnightsquad with the aim of taking these photography meets around the world. The idea behind this is just to connect like-minded people and have a good time exploring the urban environment.
To me, having the best gear to shoot with is not as important as the relationships and friendships you make through photography, so my message to people who love taking photos is just to go out, explore, and meet more people.
