My name is Jacob and I’m a wedding photographer based in Perth, Western Australia and I have been photographing weddings for the past four years.
I first gained an interest in photography when I was living in Vietnam. I wanted to capture and document as much of the street life there as I could as it was so energetic and fast paced. This eventually led to a passion for wedding photography and I haven’t looked back since.
I am a passionate photographer and I have a documentary approach to weddings. I take great joy in the challenge of capturing the most emotional and unforgettable moments on the wedding day.
I initially started using two Canon 5D III bodies when I first embarked into photography. When photographing sixteen hour day weddings in Vietnam the weight of these two camera bodies was significant.
I eventually decided to go mirrorless and get two Sony a7 III’s. This choice has saved my body and back immensely.
I keep my setup simple and stick to the Sony 35mm and Sony 85mm for the majority of the day. The less I need to think about with gear the more creative I can be, focusing solely on capturing the moments of the day.
Cameras
Sony A7 III – I use two and they are extremely light and portable. I just love how lightweight they really are.
Lenses
Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 – my favourite storytelling lens for weddings. I use it about eighty percent of the time.
Sony Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 – provides amazing colour and contrast. I will occasionally use this one for a portrait session as well.
Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 – I recently upgraded to this lens from the Sony 85mm f/1.8. Although the f/1.4 is heavier I find the colours and contrast to be far superior with the f/1.4. I rarely have to touch the photos in post edit. This lens sits on my second camera body and is especially useful throughout the ceremony.
Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2.0 – I only bring this out for some big group shots or for the dance floor, so rarely used.
Lights/Triggers
Godox V860II – I usually only ever need to use two flashes at the one time but I have four because I have had issues in the past with the Godox flashes misfiring. For the price these flashes are perfect.
Bags/Straps
Holdfast Money Maker Straps – I have had a compliment on these at every wedding I’ve ever photographed, just love them.
Tripods
Manfrotto Nano Light stand – I have two of these and they are super light and perfect for my everyday wedding photography. I was initially worried that they were too light and would fall over on a windy day when using them outside however I’ve never had any issues.
Hardware & Software
I use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to edit my images. I use a mixture of presets including Davina + Daniel, Two Mann Studios and Chrisman Studios.
