Hi, I’m Johannes Reinhart, a freelance photographer and educator living in sunny Perth, Western Australia. I was born and grew up in Germany.

I have been photographing for over 20 years, 14 of them professionally, and nowadays I concentrate on street, performance and festival photography, teaching photography and selling fine art prints.

I have always really enjoyed capturing moments as they happen, rather than trying to set up shots and this is also a reason why I’m so attracted to street photography.

I love to evoke an emotion with my images and try do so by shooting from the heart. Chances are, that if I feel something when I take a picture, the viewer will hopefully feel something too. Somehow this makes me tick.

When it comes to gear, I’m not too fussed about which brand I use (though the layout of the buttons of Canon suits me best) as long as it works and provides me with good quality files.

Because of quality, I mainly use prime lenses. The only zoom I have is the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, which is also the one that I least take with me, just because of the size. My favourite lens is the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L USM.

For most of my street shooting, I carry one body with only one lens. This keeps me light on my feet and keeps me unobtrusive (as much as you can be with a SLR) and I feel that having restrictions in your gear forces you to look and use your creativity more.

I am lucky enough to have won many awards including the 2016 Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize and the 2015 Australian Documentary Photographer of the Year as well as being a finalist at the Lensculture Street Photography Awards.

I’m also a Master of Photography with the Australian Institute of Professional Photography.

Canon 6D Mark II Light enough and solid enough.

Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L USM My favourite lens. Sharp, fast …not too light though.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Workhorse, I use it more often for commercial gigs, rather than the street

Sigma AF 50mm f1.4 DG HSM Art Super sharp, but heavy, but a beautiful lens.

Carl Zeiss Planar T 1.4/50 ZE Manual focus lens with step up ring to 77mm so I can put my ND filter on. The Canon 6D Mark II with this lens is the closest thing to mirrorless from the gear I have.

Hoya Pro1 Digital ND x8 Filter If there is too much light.

Lucky Camera Strap Standard 53 Just love the feel of real leather and love Lucky Camera Straps. Had this one for 5 years and still going strong.
