Hello, I’m Lauren Sutton, a Canberra-based freelance photographer. I travel with my husband Jack Sutton and together we document our adventures.

I started taking photos as a hobby to document our travels throughout Tasmania while we were living there. I use photography mostly as a means of storytelling through images, capturing my adventures and small details in nature as well as documenting everyday life.

I also have an interest in graphic design and illustration and love creating mixed media artworks with my photos as the basis for the artwork combined with illustrations on my iPad Pro.

In 2018 my husband and I quit our jobs to travel around the UK and Europe for just over 6 months in a 1986 VW T25 called Matilda. I found so much inspiration while travelling which helped to further develop my photography style.

After travelling we moved back to our hometown of Canberra at the end of 2018. I started a series called the Canberra Creatives Project as a way to connect with other local creatives and to tell a story about their lives, giving some insight into how they started, their processes, inspiration and future plans.

This also gave me a chance to push my photography further and gain experience working with a range of different people in different environments.

I’m looking forward to seeing which direction photography will take me in next!

Find out which gear I use below;

Camera:

I bought my first DSLR in 2015, which was a Nikon D3300 and was perfect for me to learn on. A few years ago, I found that I had outgrown that camera, so I upgraded to my current camera, a Sony a7II. I love this camera for so many reasons, but mostly because it’s so easy to use and perfect for travelling.

I always carry 2 spare batteries with me, especially when I am travelling because you never know when you will have access to power to recharge them.

I also have a Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 which I usually forget to use, but I love to capture at least one photo on it from a trip to keep as a printed memory.

Lenses:

I have 3 Sony lenses. My favourite is the Sony 55mm f/1.8 which I use 90% of the time. I love the depth of field and the way it captures light, and it is perfect for most situations. I recently added a Sony 70-200mm f/4 to my kit, which I love using to get closer to wildlife. I also have a Sony 16-35mm f/4 which is amazing for getting a wide angle of a landscape or city scape.

Drone:

We only recently purchased a DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone, so I am looking forward to expanding my capabilities with this. I love the perspective you can get from above, or even just a few metres off the ground.

Tripod:

I rarely use a tripod, but the Manfrotto Compact Action Tripod is great when I need it for self-portraits or for architectural or night photography.

Backpack:

I only recently purchased the Kamrette camera backpack and I am so happy that I can now keep everything in one place. I used to have everything in a few different small carry bags which was a nightmare when traveling and I would have to rummage around at the bottom of a bag to find something. I love that this backpack doesn’t look like a standard camera bag too!

Other:

For editing photos, I use Lightroom on my 13” MacBook Pro. I also have an Apple iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil for illustrations and creating mixed media artworks with my photos. It is also great for watching movies while traveling!

I also have a flash, which I need more practice with, and I always carry a notepad and pen just in case!
