A compact, affordable canon lens is rumored for February

Canon RF-lens rumored, photo

Canon has taken a wholly more aggressive course with new lens designs in recent months and has also accelerated the timelines of their releases.

Aside from this, the company has been pulling out quite a few new patents for new hardware features and extras more recently.

Given all of these things, it’s not much of a surprise to see that a whole new lens is on the imminent horizon from this prolific and iconic brand.

According to the website Canon Rumors, Canon is planning on announcing a new RF-24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens in this same month, February.

This lens will probably be extremely portable, fairly compact and reasonably priced too, given its modest rumored focal length and other suspected specs. Fans of Canon’s RF-mount cameras, such as the EOS R5 and EOS R6, can likely have one more optic to look forward to very soon, even if they’re operating on a more modest budget.

With many previous lens releases, Canon hasn’t been as modest as this rumor is suggesting. Other recent and not-so-recent lens releases from the brand have been much more extravagantly built and came with prices that matched their heavy-duty specs.

Overall, Canon could use a few modestly priced and compactly-designed lenses for its newer generations of mirrorless cameras. This is especially the case with RF-mount models since this particular camera mounting type remains closed to third-party AF lens models.

As for the rumored 24-50mm RF lens, if it really comes with the specs being suspected for it, this optic will be ideal for things like street photography, travel photography and improvised film-making.

What’s more, a new compact, affordably priced lens model like this could be the start of a whole minor renaissance in compact prime and zoom lenses for budget-oriented buyers of Canon cameras.

As we said above, much of this is speculative, though we’re pretty sure that the rumor of a new lens for later in February will end up being accurate.
