Canon Continues as Top U.S. Market Mirrorless Camera Brand into 2024

Whether you’re a fan of Sony, Fuji, or Canon, the sales stats don’t lie, Canon remains a mirrorless camera best-seller.
For the third year in a row, the iconic camera brand remains the top seller for the United States market.
According to Canon, the company has “solidified” its #1 spot though Canon itself hasn’t given specific sales numbers.
Previously, there had been debate about whether Canon or Sony had the number one spot on the U.S. market but third-party market tracking data seems to show that it is indeed Canon that is selling more cameras.
Bear in mind that sales figures don’t necessarily reflect brand quality or much less the overall quality of a specific product category; in this case mirrorless cameras.
While this site and many others, as well as many millions of camera users worldwide definitely have lots of praise for many Canon mirrorless cameras, Sony, Nikon and Fujifilm also make excellent devices.
In many cases, specific cameras from rival brands are indeed superior at specific types of photographic work compared to their Canon counterparts.
That said, Canon’s mirrorless cameras are widely praised, and many specific models deliver superb specs.
Despite a late entrance to the mirrorless device market compared to Sony or Fujifilm, Canon has done an excellent job of beefing up its selection of devices, accessories and the quality of both.
The company has also been extremely successful at marketing its products and making them affordable.
Several of the brand’s cameras are particularly sought-after with models such as the R5 full-frame being exceptionally notable for their popularity among pro users.
All of these factors combined make it easy to see why Canon is so popular even if you could debate that Sony or Nikon or Fuji make better cameras in certain contexts.
For its claim of being the top-selling camera brand in the U.S. for 2024, Canon has been more emphatic than in previous years. The company has cited units sold based on data from a third-party tracking company called Circana.
The same company was used in 2021, 2022 and 2023 to back Canon’s claims of being the top seller.
Interestingly, Canon has kept sales high despite not releasing much in 2023. Its superbly-priced R8 full-frame camera was released way back in February of 2023 while Canon’s other major 2023 release was the R100 in May. This latter is a compact APS-C mirrorless camera for the budget market.
Before that, Canon’s last serious camera release was the R6 in late 2022. Nonetheless, even if one quibbles at the details, Canon sales have been consistently high, probably in part due to the brand having so many available cameras for different segments of the market.
For 2024, though it’s not yet officially confirmed, we’re expecting at least a couple new cameras from Canon, and possibly one major update to an old Canon best-seller. We’ll post updates as they emerge.
