SJCAM is among the leading “GoPro clone” manufacturers operating today, having introduced one of the first low-budget action cam competitors with the popular SJ4000 model.
Their latest release, the SJ30, is perhaps their most ambitious action camera to date, retaining budget-friendly pricing while adding a series of premium-level features not often found in this range.
A standout feature that elevates the SJ30’s performance is its dual-lens system, which lets users switch between Day and Night Modes with a 1/2.0″ day sensor (f/2.8) and 1/1.8″ night sensor (f/1.8).
There’s also a 2.51-inch flip-out touchscreen, making the SJ30 an excellent option for solo content creators and vloggers who need to frame themselves while recording.
Additional features that mixed-media content creators will likely embrace include a wealth of shooting modes, including 8K resolution (capped at 20 FPS), time-lapse and slow-motion modes, and a photography option.
Battery life is also generous, particularly when using the power handle, which provides up to seven hours of additional runtime under the manufacturer’s stated test conditions.
This is one of its strongest selling points for outdoor content creators, outperforming many of the leading rivals, including industry giants like DJI and GoPro.
With five metres of waterproofing without the case (extending to 30 metres with the optional waterproof housing), the SJ30 presents an impressively well-rounded feature set for versatile content creation.
Build & Appearance

The SJCAM SJ30 delivers impressive performance across dozens of features.
The SJ30 camera is housed in a sturdy plastic casing that’s waterproof up to 5 metres, and slightly bulkier than the average action cam due to the additional lens for low-light shooting.
It’s still relatively compact, with a matte-black composite body measuring 74 × 52 × 38 mm and weighing 162 g. Its smooth sides and streamlined design give it a tidy appearance.
The front-facing side of the camera includes the two lenses housed behind a protective cover, with a covered USB-C port on one side and the main power and operation button on the other.
The SJ30’s microphone is located on the top of the device, alongside the main shutter button, which has a satisfyingly responsive, clicky feel when pressed.
On the rear, the 2.51-inch touchscreen provides a crisp display. It flips out smoothly when you squeeze the two side buttons and rotates up to 180° for easier framing when vlogging.
The external power bank grip continues the camera’s sturdy, streamlined aesthetic, with a nice weight that improves the tactile handling and a dedicated button to control the camera when connected via USB-C.
An additional button is included at the top of the handle to check remaining power, along with a quick-release bolt to adjust the camera’s tilt, allowing for more potential shots.
With the action camera and handle combined using the magnetic quick-release plate system, the SJ30 is a well-balanced device that doesn’t feel cheap.
Additional protection comes through the durable camera housing, while the native weatherproofing delivers an IPX8 rating that allows for up to 5 metres of submersion.
One potential issue is compatibility with third-party cages, given the added size and bulk compared to smaller GoPro and DJI action cameras.
Fortunately, SJCAM offers a dedicated range of accessories for the SJ30, or you can check the specs on third-party options to confirm they’re large enough for the camera.
It also comes with a separate kit of components that enables users to mount the SJ30 action camera on a car dashboard or bike handlebars via the included cage.
Ergonomics & Handling

Combined with the power handle, the SJ30 is comfortable for long shoots.
As noted above, the SJ30 is bulkier than comparable action cameras due to the inclusion of the additional Night Mode lens.
In practice, this extra bulk doesn’t significantly limit its versatility. The SJ30 is suitable for handheld use, chest mounting, and a variety of other mounting setups.
The 162g weight gives it a substantial feel, while the rubber grip handle for the battery is comfortable to hold over long shoots.
This comfort is matched by a variety of additional features that make it fun to use and capture unique angles, notably the impressive SteadyMotion 2.0 stabilisation.
SJCAM has also included voice control, which is ideal for quick activation when the camera is mounted out of reach.
Pre-recording and loop recording expand your options further, while the flip screen simplifies shooting to-camera monologues for solo content creators.
It’s a carefully considered setup that goes above and beyond the standard basics you’d expect from a budget-friendly action cam.
Video Performance

The dual lens system opens up creative possibilities for low-light shooting scenarios.
The SJ30’s 8K capability is one of its core marketing angles, though the 20 FPS limit narrows its real-world use.
While 4K/60 FPS delivers the most natural footage and is the go-to mode for most, 8K still has utility.
The extra resolution helps with cropping and pulling out details, like in detailed landscape shots, or reframing for social media.
There are also additional modes covering 1080p, 2K, 5K, and 6K, each with variable maximum frame rates that lend themselves to experimentation when shooting action.
The available frame rates also enable slow-motion recording, with up to 240fps at 1080p and 120fps at 2K, making it possible to capture fast-moving action in greater detail.
It’s the 4K mode that hits the sweet spot, balancing detailed resolution and motion rendering with reasonable file sizes for storage management.
The SteadyMotion 2.0 uses a powerful 6-axis gyro to keep dynamic shots as smooth as possible, along with a horizon-lock system to correct tilting.
This translates to an impressive level of performance where it counts: tracking fast-paced and unpredictable subjects like animals or sporting activities.
Vertical video is also included, capturing vertically in native resolution instead of cropping a horizontal recording to deliver the best image possible.
If you’re a content creator uploading to platforms like TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels, this option is a real bonus.
Low Light Performance

Shooting in variable lighting is easy thanks to the Day and Night Modes.
Undoubtedly the most distinctive feature of the SJ30 is its dual-camera function, which allows users to switch between day and night imaging modes.
With this setup, the daylight camera has a 1/2.0-inch sensor at f/2.8, while the dedicated starlight camera uses a larger 1/1.8-inch sensor and f/1.8 aperture.
The dedicated starlight sensor and wider aperture are designed to improve image capture in low-light conditions compared with conventional action cameras.
The camera retains an impressive amount of detail and definition when shooting in very dark environments.
While fast-moving subjects in such low-light conditions are challenging to track, shots of landscapes and similarly static scenes benefit greatly.
It’s also adept at retaining vibrant colours, an area in which many action cameras in this price range struggle.
There are different methods you can use for switching, from manually enabling Night Mode using the side button to activating the Auto Switch mode.
While much has been made of the SJ30’s 8K resolution, the creative potential that Night Mode offers is perhaps its strongest selling point.
Image Quality

The SJ30 produces a nice balance of sharpness, contrast, and vibrant colours.
The SJ30 certainly punches above its weight when it comes to features, but how does it stack up in terms of overall image quality for videos and images?
While you won’t get the same pristine level of imagery from pricier alternatives from brands like DJI, what’s here is nevertheless impressive considering the entry-level pricing.
Frame rate limitations in 8K aside, footage shot on the SJ30 is consistently sharp at 4K/60fps, with plenty of detail in both standard and low-light conditions thanks to the dual lens system.
Colours are pleasingly vibrant, with a satisfying sharpness that brings out subtle details in complex compositions, such as landscape coverage, but can be excessive in some lighting.
Fortunately, setting sharpness to “Medium” can reduce excessive sharpening and produce a more natural, cinematic look.
Photos retain the same balance of sharpness and detail, although the shooting mode is a little on the cumbersome side, and shooting up-close subjects can result in artifacts and edge blurring.
That said, the SJ30 is first and foremost an action camera. Most users are likely to use its photo mode for quick reference shots or thumbnails, leaving more demanding photography to a dedicated camera.

Here are some additional sample video screenshots and photographs taken with the SJCAM SJ30 8K dual-lens action camera:

Overall Performance
SJCAM has pulled out the stops for the SJ30, integrating several premium-level features that transform a solid, mid-budget action camera into a truly impressive powerhouse.
The SJ30 is generally intuitive to use, from its physical controls to navigating the extensive settings menu.
Everything functions with minimal friction, from the quick boot-up speed to the menu structure and responsiveness when accessing different shooting modes and settings.
Some trade-offs are no doubt a consequence of the low budget, most notably the decreased frame rate when switching to 8K mode (20 FPS is fine for landscapes, but action-heavy footage quickly looks choppy).
It’s a minor drawback, as switching to 4K at 60fps or 30fps produces more suitable results for most types of online content.
The SteadyMotion 2.0 stabilisation algorithm also delivers consistent results, keeping footage smooth when walking across difficult terrain.
This steadiness can be further improved by activating the camera’s 45° horizon-lock mode, although users should be mindful of the frame crop in this mode that reduces the wide-angle perspective.
As with most action cameras, internal audio recording isn’t optimized for voices, but the native dual microphones include wind reduction that makes it fine for capturing background and ambient sounds.
Other Useful Features
The SJ30 packs in a selection of additional handy features that go beyond its strong low-light performance, extended battery life, and broad selection of shooting modes.
The camera supports pre-recording with a buffer of up to 51 seconds, allowing it to capture footage from before you press the record button.
A dedicated Car Mode is also included for dashcam use, which connects to a vehicle’s 12V outlet via USB-C, then uses loop recording to save storage space.
You can also use the SJ30’s internal voice recognition processor, which works offline and provides hands-free control, activating recording during activities like climbing and mountain biking.
How I Tested the SJCAM SJ30 8K Action Camera

When testing the SJCAM SJ30 8K dual-lens action camera, I took it on several hikes and a camping trip to evaluate performance in a range of lighting conditions.
This included assessing the weight and feel over long shooting periods, and the duration of the extended battery life when using the power grip and when shooting with the camera solo.
I also tested the SJ30’s magnetic quick-release mounting system on rugged, uneven trails to see how secure it is when handling jarring motion and jolts.
I captured footage and photographs to assess wide-angle image quality, still-photo performance, and video modes such as time-lapse, slow motion, and low-light recording.
Throughout testing, I assessed the SJ30’s functionality, the intuitiveness of its controls, and the ease with which features are accessible in real-world shooting scenarios and different types of subjects.
Comparison clips were also created to compare the difference between Day and Night Mode, along with footage from other cameras, to evaluate the noise control and clarity of the SJ30’s low-light performance.
Additional photographs were taken using the SJ30 to assess image quality and potential distortion when shooting close-up subjects or using digital zoom.
Alternatives to the SJ30 8K
There’s a selection of alternatives to the SJ30, both from within the SJCAM ecosystem and from other budget and major brands.
From SJCAM, the SJ11 Active strips back some of the features found in the SJ30 for an even more affordable alternative, delivering 4K/30 FPS video and 8-axis gyro stabilisation.
There’s also the Akaso Brave 7 LE at a similar low price point to the SJ11, or the Brave 8 at a comparable price to the SJ30, albeit lacking the latter’s 8K video shooting and 180° flip-up screen.
If you’re open to increasing your budget, the DJI Osmo Action 4 delivers superior daytime imaging and impressive colour depth, with the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 also offering a performance and quality upgrade.
Value for Money
The SJCAM SJ30 8K dual-lens action camera is exceptional value for money, particularly for content creators who prioritize shooting footage in the wilderness.
Thanks to its low-light performance, underwater shooting, and extended battery life, it’s tailor-made for filmmaking away from the modern conveniences of urban life.
It’s also a capable all-rounder, producing clear images and footage that give content creators flexibility in how they capture their subjects.
Bringing all of the SJ30’s many features together, it’s a compelling rival for flagship-level models, delivering instant and impressive results out of the box.
SJCAM also offers a more comprehensive set – the Creator Combo – which includes additional accessories like the cloth travel pouch, mount adapter set, and lavalier microphone.
SJCAM SJ30 8K Review | Conclusion
The SJCAM SJ30 occupies a niche position within the crowded mid-budget action camera market, with a selection of features solo and outdoor content creators won’t find at a similar price.
Battery longevity and low-light shooting, combined with a handy flip-out screen for solo vlogging, make it best-in-class in its price range for versatile videography.
Footage and photos are consistently detailed and balanced, while the sturdy, compact build and grippy handle make the SJ30 a pleasure to use over long days of shooting.
If you’re looking for an affordable action camera that doesn’t skimp on quality or features, the SJCAM SJ30 8K dual-lens action camera is well worth considering.
