Among the many types of photography, wildlife photography is arguably the most rewarding.

Few experiences match the thrill of capturing the perfect shot of an animal in its natural environment – whether it’s feeding, flying, foraging, or hunting.

Yet, as both budding and seasoned wildlife photographers know, Mother Nature doesn’t always make things easy.

Wildlife photographers often have to spend hours waiting patiently in place for that perfect moment, and many missions and excursions end without success due to bad timing, poor positioning, or sheer bad luck.

Not to mention the fact that you need expert-level knowledge of the animal kingdom if you want to accurately and efficiently find a specific species.

Fortunately, emerging technologies and helpful apps, like WildTrack AI, aim to change all that.

In this in-depth WildTrack AI review, I’ll explore the key features and functionalities of this AI-powered wildlife enthusiast companion app to help you decide if it’s worth adding to your toolkit.

What Does WildTrack AI Offer?

WildTrack AI markets itself as the ultimate companion for wildlife; a next-generation app aimed at nature enthusiasts, combining cutting-edge tech with traditional tracking knowledge.

In real-world terms, this basically means that it delivers field-guide-level information and insights, plus AI-powered futuristic features, all in the palm of your hand.

It’s not necessarily aimed at photographers in particular, but many of its features and functions are applicable to the wildlife photography community.

As a member of that community, I was eager to test this app for myself, and I was immediately impressed by its clean layout, intuitive navigation, and wide range of features, including everything from an augmented-reality ruler for measuring paw prints to detailed databases of National Parks worldwide.

The biggest selling point of the app is arguably the sheer depth of data it has to offer.

There are immensely detailed profiles of countless species, including photographs and extensive paragraphs about their habits and behaviors, designed to help users not only learn more about them but also become better at tracking them down.

That’s where the value lies for photographers, too.

With this app by your side as your own personal wildlife study guide, you can broaden your knowledge of the natural world, gaining the knowledge you need to become a smarter, savvier, and more effective wildlife photographer.

WildTrack AI Review: Features

As I mentioned earlier, WildTrack AI has many features.

While I found that not all of them were necessarily relevant to my needs or photography in general, most are still interesting, and many are worthwhile for the average wildlife photographer.

In the following sections, I’ll provide brief overviews of some of the most important features, explaining how they work and what value they can offer to photography fans.

User-Friendly Interface

In general, I found WildTrack AI’s design quite appealing, with a clean, field-ready interface and intuitive navigation.

It took me just minutes to adapt to it, quickly accessing enhanced observation forms, camera tools, and species tagging.

In Settings, you’ll be able to change the default unit for measurements, your preferred language (English and Spanish options are available), and find useful tips and guides on animal tracking.

Extensive Animal Database

This is the core of what WildTrack AI is all about: information.

This app offers incredibly deep, detailed profiles of hundreds of different animal species from all over the world, complete with high-resolution images, videos, sounds, and extensive descriptions of their habitats, habits, diets, and so on.

To navigate the app more easily, you can browse animals by type, category, and family. You can then use advanced filters to narrow your search further.

You can learn so much about any species that might interest you, from its height and weight to what times of day it tends to be most active.

You can then use that information to more efficiently and intelligently find the animals you want to photograph.

Obviously, many of the animal pages might not be of relevance to you.

I didn’t find myself wanting to look up pages about lions and tigers, for example, but was still able to learn a lot about some of the local species in my area, and I intend to take that forward into my future adventures.

AI-Powered Animal Identification and Insights

AI-powered scan is this app’s most impressive feature. Here’s how it works:

  • You find a paw print out in the wild.
  • Open the app, choose Paw Detection, and hit the “Scan” button.
  • Take a picture of the paw print in the app, and let the AI work its magic to figure out which animal most likely made it.

I love using this feature. While I have some rudimentary animal tracking knowledge, I don’t classify myself as an expert when it comes to picking which animal left a specific print, but thanks to WildTrack AI, I don’t need to; in a matter of seconds, I can find out all I need to know.

It’s the kind of feature that makes you feel like a master tracker, without having to spend years studying paw print sizes, depths, and shapes.

In addition to the Paw Detection scan, another of WildTrack AI’s AI-powered features is the Animal Detection scan.

Using this scan, you can instantly identify any species from a photo with the aid of AI. I found it worked almost flawlessly every time, and it’s remarkably fast, too.

With a feature like this, even total wildlife photography amateurs can set out into the wilderness with a certain degree of confidence, tracking paw prints, learning more about wildlife environments, and identifying animals in no time, all with near-perfect precision.

Additionally, once you’ve identified an animal with AI, you can also learn more about its anatomy, behavior, and other insights. It’s like having a world-class tracking partner built into your phone.

AR Ruler

Here’s another futuristic feature found in WildTrack AI: the augmented reality ruler.

The way this works is straightforward. Again, it involves your device’s camera; you simply scan over the animal tracks you encounter, and the AR ruler will help you accurately measure their width and length, without having to use any physical tools, like rulers or measuring tape.

I personally found the AI paw print detection a more useful feature than this, since it told me which species I was following at any given time, but the AR ruler is still a handy option to have, especially if you’re equally interested in tracking as you are in photography.

Offline Capabilities

A problem I – and plenty of other photographers – have had in the past with many mobile apps is that they only work when you’re online.

That’s not a problem when you’re at home, in the studio, or in a big city with Wi-Fi hotspots and 5G data coverage all around. However, when you’re out in the wilderness, connectivity can be spotty, to say the least.

Thankfully, a feature and a benefit of WildTrack AI is that it supports offline use.

That doesn’t mean that you can access all of its features and in-depth databases when you’re offline, as that would simply take up too much space on your device.

Instead, you can manually select certain species, images, and videos as “favorites” and then view those pages and files, even if you lose signal.

Your mileage with this feature will vary, depending on how many “favorites” you make, but I found it quite helpful to tag the species I was most interested in, allowing me to keep on getting value from the app, even when I was miles from the closest cell tower.

Tracking and Logging

WildTrack AI also has a journal-like feature, letting users track and log their animal sightings, wildlife encounters, locations they’ve visited, and anything else they might like to document.

So, if you’re the sort of wildlife photographer or outdoor adventurer who enjoys keeping detailed records of your excursions, you’ll certainly use this feature a lot.

It’s quite detailed, too. You can record individual animal sightings with timestamps and geolocation data from your phone, as well as write your own personalized notes, as and when you want.

Additionally, you can add pins to the map where you spot animals in the wild.

All the data you save will be stored in your own dedicated journal space for future reference, allowing you to look back on your adventures and learn from them.

National Park Database

As someone who has been doing wildlife photography for many years, I know that National Parks rank among the best spots for capturing diverse species on camera.

I’ve spent much time in the parks closest to my home, exploring forests and vast expanses of wilderness in search of birds, deer, and more.

That’s why I love WildTrack AI’s comprehensive National Parks database, which includes not only parks in the U.S., but all over the globe.

There are detailed profiles of countless parks, and you can scour the world via a global map to browse them all or search for specific entries.

You can learn where each park is located and which animals live there, which could help you when plotting out future trips or travels for your next photography mission.

Wildlife Community

There’s also a communal element to WildTrack AI, and while this won’t be of great interest to everyone, it’s a nice feature for those who like to engage with others and feel like part of a larger group.

To be more precise, WildTrack AI lets you share your own images of the animals you encounter or the paw prints you spot out in the wild. You can also post your own personal tracking tips or stories of your adventures.

Or, if you’re not much of a sharer, you can look at other people’s pictures and read their tips and experiences to potentially gain valuable insights to take forward into your future excursions.

Who Is WildTrack AI For?

WildTrack AI is aimed at a broad audience, primarily focusing on people who are passionate about nature and wildlife

It can prove useful for adventurers, hikers, wildlife watchers, campers, and other outdoor enthusiasts, as well as those who simply wish to learn more about specific species from around the globe.

As far as the photography community is concerned, however, this app is obviously best for those with an active interest in tracking down and capturing pictures of different kinds of animals.

If forests, jungles, canyons, and National Parks are where you spend much of your time, this is the app for you.

It’s also well-suited to those who are just getting into nature photography and looking for a helpful head-start, as well as more experienced photographers eager to enhance their excursions with the aid of modern technologies.

As a big wildlife lover and keen nature photographer myself, I found that this app was an ideal companion for my forays into local forests and woodlands.

While not all of its features and functions were relevant for me – and may not be for you, either – there’s still a lot of value in this app, which is packed full of information and a number of time-saving features.

It’s worth noting, however, that this app is an iOS exclusive, for the time being. So, if you’re an Android user, you’ll have to seek out alternative options that are compatible with your device.

If, however, you have an iOS device and feel like WildTrack AI might be the right fit for you, I strongly recommend giving it a try.
