Luminar Neo AI Assistant Explained: Faster, Smarter Photo Editing

Photo editing doesn’t have to be complicated. That’s a belief that’s always been at the core of Luminar software since its origin.

Long before AI became a buzzword, Luminar was using AI-powered tools to make professional-looking edits available to beginners and enthusiasts.

The AI Assistant is a natural next step on this mission. This tool allows you to both create and learn by using simple prompts that either execute edits or explain how to do them.

By combining efficiency, accessibility, and creative control, the AI Assistant not only speeds up your workflow but also helps you understand why certain edits work and make your images pop.

What is Luminar Neo AI Assistant?

If you read our Luminar Neo 2025 Fall Update article, you know that Skylum announced an AI Assistant coming in the near future. Well, this feature is finally here, and I think you’re going to love it.

Neo’s AI Assistant is an intelligent chatbot with editing capabilities. This feature can suggest edits or explain how you can fix a specific problem in your photo.

Furthermore, it can analyze your image and automatically apply different edits from which you can choose your favorite.

The AI Assistant is built for a wide range of users. Beginners can use it as a one-click solution to enhance their photos, or as a tutor that will help them learn how to use Neo and editing techniques in general.

Enthusiasts and professionals, on the other hand, can use the AI Assistant to make their workflows more efficient, saving time.

They can do this by letting the assistant handle the groundwork, so they can dedicate their efforts exclusively to refining the edits with their unique creative vision.

How Does the Luminar Neo AI Assistant Work?

Once you launch Luminar Neo, select a photo from the Catalog and open it in either the Presets or Edit workspaces.

Here, you’ll find the AI assistant at the bottom right corner of the screen.

To open the assistant, simply click on its icon or use the keyboard shortcut Cmd+K.

To interact with it, you have the option of two types of prompts:

• Action prompts: With these, the AI Assistant applies the edits that respond to that prompt.
• Question prompts: These will give you step-by-step guides to solving the problem you’re trying to fix, so you can execute the edit yourself. They’ll also tell you which tools you can use.

The great thing about Neo’s AI Assistant is that it won’t give you standard answers or follow pre-made formulas to enhance the image. Instead, it will analyze the image and provide the most suitable solution.

Remember that this is a brand new feature, and, like any other LLM tool, it will keep improving.

It’s important to note that the AI Assistant isn’t meant to be a one-click solution that replaces manual editing. This tool acts as a smart helper, streamlining your work so you can take control and fine-tune at your leisure.

What Can You Do With Luminar Neo AI Assistant?

Now that you know what the Neo AI Assistant is and what it can do, let’s put it to the test.

Editing

As you can see, in this portrait, all I did was ask to “Enhance this photo”. Even if the AI Assistant’s intention is not to be a one-click solution, it can still be used as such.

It gave me three different options, and I think this one is good enough that I could just leave it as is if I wanted.

Otherwise, I can go through the edits to fine-tune what the AI Assistant has already edited, or continue the workflow using different tools. In this case, I’ll remove some of the Magenta color cast.

In this next example, I opted for a more specific instruction. I asked the AI assistant to adjust the lighting as if the photo were taken at sunrise. So, it made the tones warmer to resemble the golden hour.

Another great thing is that you can keep chatting. So, following the sunrise instruction, I asked it to make it more cinematic and dramatic – this was the result.

Learn

Another way to interact with the AI Assistant is to ask it how to make specific edits. Look at this image; it did a great job with the action prompt “Enhance it” by adjusting the light and color.

However, the eyes were still a bit blurry when zooming in. So, I asked, “How can I sharpen it?”

The AI Assistant directed me to the two AI tools available on Neo: Supersharp AI and Face AI.

The great thing is that it includes a button to directly access these features, so I don’t have to look for them in the panels or waste any time.

You can always get back to the chat and pick up where you left off. This is within the same editing session – once you close Neo, you lose the chat.

Another way to learn is by studying the steps the AI took to edit your image. You can do this inside the chat as it always lets you know what’s happening – even with generic prompts like “Enhance”.

Alternatively, you can go to the Edits tab and see exactly what it has done.

Here, you can see which edits led to the result you’re seeing, which will help you to learn how to achieve the results by yourself.

How Can I Get the Luminar Neo AI Assistant?

The AI Assistant is a new feature and therefore requires the latest version of Neo.

So, buying Luminar Neo today means that you’ll get the AI Assistant included. The same goes for people who bought it after June 1, 2025.

What if you bought Luminar Neo before June 1? Well, in that case, you’ll have to buy an Upgrade Pass or an Ecosystem Pass. This will grant you access not just to the AI Assistant, but to all the latest updates, such as the Photo Restoration and the Light Depth tools.

Users with an active subscription will also receive the AI Assistant tool with the latest update. Please note that currently, Neo is no longer available as a membership; you can only buy the perpetual license.
