Most AI editing apps are designed to give you photos that look just like a pro editor has retouched them.

But not Photoleap.

In this app, it’s all about being as wacky as possible.

So let’s see what you can use the app for and how good it is.

Basics and Installation

Photoleap is a photo-editing app from Lightricks, the same developer behind the wildly popular Facetune app.

And in a way, Facetune is the “mature” version of Photoleap, which pretty much tells you everything you need to know.

But unlike Facetune, this app is only available on iOS devices, with Android support having been pulled in mid-2025.

That being said, the actual UI is very similar to Facetune, so if you’re already used to that app, you might want to try Photoleap as your funny or fantastical image generator.

Simply register on the app or the website, then download the app and permit it to access files. Then, you can start tapping through the menus for all the options.

Feature Review

Unlike Facetune, which is a full-fledged photo editor, Photoleap is more like a photo generator with minor editing options.

Most of the tools are geared towards creating designs from scratch, whether using an image or text as a prompt (or both).

Let’s take a look at some of the key features in depth.

AI General Image Generator

This is probably Photoleap’s headline feature and is genuinely fun to use.

The text-to-image generator works similarly to tools like Midjourney or DALL-E, but has been optimized for mobile use.

You type in a prompt, select a style (of which there are dozens, ranging from photorealistic to anime to abstract), then wait for the AI to work its magic.

The results can be a bit hit-or-miss, though.

I’d suggest being as specific as possible with your prompts. “A sunset over mountains” will give you generic results, but “A vibrant orange sunset over snow-capped mountains with a lake in the foreground, dramatic clouds, golden hour lighting” tends to produce much better output.

AI Headshot Generator

This is one of the more “serious” uses of the app, in which Photoleap will create a headshot from your existing gallery or image inputs.

The generator comes with a bunch of different styles you can choose from, including both professional photoshoots for job applications as well as more wacky social media trends.

Uploading images in a few different angles works well, but I was able to get a solid headshot from a single selfie of a man standing side-on.

AI Tattoo Generator

This is perhaps one of the most novel options, but it’s a well-executed one.

The tattoo generator takes your image, then superimposes a tattoo of your choice, or takes input from text or image prompts to help design a new tattoo.

The UI itself provides a nifty “masking” brush that you can use to precisely shape or size the intended tattoo.

Note that some tattoo designs might not match your expectations, as the AI tends to stretch smaller designs or fill them with a lot of random lines or vines on the edges to increase their overall size.

Additionally, while the AI attempts to wrap the tattoo around the contours of your arm or wherever you place it, the perspective won’t always look natural.

It’s fine for getting a general idea, but don’t use this as your only reference before getting actual ink.

AI Replace

This tool lets you swap out objects in a photo by selecting them and typing what you want instead.

In theory, it’s brilliant. In practice, it’s lackluster.

I tried several replacements: swapping a plain coffee mug for a colorful vase, changing a boring gray couch to a vibrant blue one, and replacing modern furniture with vintage pieces.

The AI understood the assignments, but the lighting and shadows pretty much never matched the rest of the scene.

For best results, you need an image that’s evenly-lit throughout and doesn’t have a lot going on stylistically. Complex lighting situations like harsh directional sunlight or dramatic indoor lighting often produce obvious mismatches.

Finally, you’ll likely need to use other editing tools to blend the replaced object properly, which somewhat defeats the “one-tap” convenience factor.

AI Background Generator

This is one of Photoleap’s stronger AI features, and I found myself using it regularly.

The tool creates entirely new backgrounds for your photos, either from preset options or custom text prompts. The AI does a solid job of matching lighting and color tones between the subject and the new background.

I tested it extensively on portraits with removed backgrounds. Prompts like “professional office setting with natural window light” or “cozy coffee shop” produced convincing results most of the time.

Where the AI might fail is with complex interactions. If your subject is sitting or leaning on something, the AI may not properly integrate those contact points with the new background, and they will float.

For standing portraits where the background and foreground or subject are clearly separate, this tool is excellent.

AI Art Generator (Photo to Painting)

While similar to the Image Generator, this tool focuses specifically on creating artistic images rather than photorealistic ones.

You get a lot of style options like oil painting, watercolor, digital art, abstract, or even surrealism.

I found the watercolor and oil painting styles particularly impressive. They capture the texture and brushwork characteristics convincingly.

The abstract and surrealist options are more experimental and can require several generations to get something coherent.

The art generator works well for creating unique backgrounds or social media graphics. Don’t think of it as replacing artists, but using visual experimentation to bridge the gap between no-budget and low-budget.

AI Image Extender (AI Uncrop)

This feature expands your photo’s boundaries by generating what the AI thinks should be there.

I tested it on several tightly-cropped images, and the results were somewhat good. The AI does analyze the existing content and extends it outward, trying to maintain consistent style, lighting, and perspective.

For example, I had a portrait cropped too tightly at the shoulders. The Image Extender successfully added space on both sides and below, generating plausible clothing and background details.

However, the extended areas are sometimes slightly softer or less detailed than the original image. For social media use, where you need specific aspect ratios, this tool is incredibly handy, but you may need a few generations to get it right.

The AI works best when extending similar or simple content (like skies, walls, or blurred backgrounds). Complex patterns or detailed textures don’t always extend seamlessly.

AI Photo to Cartoon

Want to cartoonify yourself or your photos? This tool does exactly that.

It applies various cartoon and illustration styles to your images, from Disney-like animations to comic book art to simple line drawings.

The style variety is impressive, and each produces distinctly different results.

Photoleap - A Fun AI Photo Editing Tool for Scroll Stopping Images 16

I tested it mostly on portraits, and the feature detection is solid. The AI correctly identifies facial features and translates them into cartoon equivalents, so they’re still recognizable as the source.

Some styles work better than others. The anime and Disney-inspired options produced the most polished results, while the comic book style sometimes added odd textures or colors.

It’s a fun feature for profile pictures or just playing around, but ultimately not really essential for serious photo editing work, evocative of the app’s entire design.

AI Interior Design

This is one of the more practical AI features, regardless of whether you’re into photography or want ideas.

You can upload photos of rooms and either redesign them completely or swap out individual furniture pieces. The AI offers various style options, including modern, minimalist, rustic, industrial, or Scandi.

Notably, the complete redesigns could be awkward. Sometimes the AI created beautiful, cohesive spaces, but other times it produced bizarre furniture arrangements or mismatched styles.

The furniture swap feature was more reliable. If I selected a couch, it would be changed to a different style, and the AI did a decent job of matching scale and perspective. Lighting was occasionally off, but nothing that couldn’t be adjusted with other tools.

AI Photo Enhancer

This is your standard “one-tap” enhancement feature, and it works pretty well.

The enhancer automatically adjusts sharpness, color, contrast, and exposure to improve overall image quality. It’s particularly useful for photos taken in suboptimal conditions, such as low light, cloudy days, or quick snapshots.

I ran several tests with decent-quality photos, which didn’t really reveal much. If I used photos straight from the phone, though, the enhancer brought noticeable improvements in most cases, especially in color composition and contrast.

While the AI can’t rescue a fundamentally bad photo, it can improve an already decent shot that just needs polish, which saves you from manually tweaking a dozen sliders.

Do note that you can’t really adjust what the AI does. It’s all-or-nothing, which means sometimes the AI goes too far and you have to undo it and adjust manually anyway.

AI Morph Faces (Face Mix)

This option combines two faces, creating a blend of both people’s features.

It’s obviously for fun to see what you’d look like when combined with a celebrity or friend. However, it can produce some surprisingly realistic results when it comes to parents and children.

The key to good results is using photos with similar angles and lighting. Front-facing portraits with neutral expressions will work best, and you’ll get a similarly styled image in return.

AI Face Swap

This does exactly what it says on the tin: swaps faces between two people in photos.

The feature’s become hugely popular on social media, and Photoleap’s implementation is quite good. The AI detects faces, matches skin tones, and adjusts lighting to make the swap look as natural as possible.

I tested it on group photos and individual portraits. The face detection worked reliably, even with partially obscured faces or people at slight angles.

Overall, there’s nothing to dislike about this feature, as it’ll generally produce solid results.

AI Character Generator

This tool creates digital characters from scratch based on your descriptions or generates stylized versions of people in photos.

You can create fantasy characters, video game avatars, comic book heroes, or any other type of digital persona.

The style options here can be a bit overwhelming at first, so make sure to stick with it to get good results.

The feature also works with uploaded photos, transforming real people into various character styles. This works better for some styles than others, with fantasy and sci-fi styles much more supported and believable.

AI Image Upscaler

This option increases image resolution, claiming to upscale images to 4K quality.

It uses AI to add detail and sharpness when enlarging images, rather than simply stretching pixels. I tested it on several low-resolution photos, and the results were similar to traditional upscaling.

Much like other tools, the AI can’t create detail that wasn’t there originally, so blurry photos stay blurry, just at a higher resolution.

Animate Photos

As with other AI image animation tools, this feature adds subtle motion to still images, creating a “living photo” effect.

The tool automatically detects elements that can be animated. It will create videos with clouds moving, water flowing, or hair swaying, but you can also manually select areas to animate.

The landscape results were particularly impressive, with clouds drifting and trees swaying naturally. Portrait animation is more subtle, usually adding just a gentle zoom or slight movement.

The animations export as short video loops, making them perfect for social media posts that need to grab attention.

Standard Editing Tools

Beyond AI-oriented features, Photoleap can function as a miniature photo editing suite, similar to Facetune.

You’ve got pretty much every standard editing option, plus a few extras like smart object removal and replacement. These use AI to “fill in” the gap, and they’re generally solid, but can struggle with significant texture differences.

Pricing and Who Is It For

Notably, Photoleap isn’t free, but it does come with a seven-day trial to allow you to test out the features.

Photoleap - A Fun AI Photo Editing Tool for Scroll Stopping Images 29

The annual subscription (your only real option) can fluctuate between an average of US$40 and $60, but the features of the Pro tier can be as much as $70, so you’ll need to set away slightly less than $6 a month for the app.

Considering the sheer amount of features, this is a nifty editing suite and AI generator.

However, some tools can be a bit lackluster, with the developers using a “spray-and-pray” approach of adding features that might not suit everyone.

So, I’d advise you to use the free trial and check how the tool’s abilities match up with your actual needs for social media or content generation.
