Whenever you need new content beyond the edge of the original picture, you can use GenExpand to generate new details that blend perfectly.

While GenExpand analyses the entire image to figure out what content it should generate, you can also ask for specific things. This is because GenExpand also has a text-to-image feature that lets you use prompts to specify what the new content should be.

How to Use GenExpand in Luminar Neo?

Import

If you’re familiar with Luminar Neo, you’re already familiar with the Catalog and you can skip directly to step 2.

If you’re a new user, you should know that the first step is to import your images into Luminar.

This is a very simple process: click Add Photos. This will open a browser window for you to find the photo you want on your computer or hard drive. Then, click Add.

Now, you’ll have a copy of your file inside Luminar Neo. This means your original file is safe and sound, allowing you to freely edit in Neo, knowing you have a backup in case you don’t like the results.

Expand

Select the photo you want to expand from your Catalog. Then, click on GenExpand, which you’ll find on the right side of the screen inside the Generative Tools panel.

Keep in mind that you’ll need an active subscription or the latest update to have access to the Generative Tools. You’ll also require an Internet connection.

Once you’ve launched Gen Expand, all you need to do is click and drag one edge outward. While you can extend the canvas in every direction, you’ll get better results if you do one at a time.

Let go of the handle when you’ve reached the desired extension or the limit. Then you can simply click Expand and let the AI generate a proposed solution.

Alternatively, you can type a prompt describing what you would like it to include, then click Expand.

You’ll see a graphic moving while the AI is working its magic, and after a few seconds, you’ll see the result.

Fine-tune and Save

After you’ve expanded your photo, you have different options.

If you’re not happy with it, you can click Expand again to generate a new iteration – there’s no limit to the number of tries you can make.

You can also keep expanding the image in the same direction, or expand it in the other direction if you still need it to be larger.

Once you’re satisfied, click Save in the top-right corner of the screen to apply the edit. It’s important to know that you won’t overwrite the original image.

Instead, GenExpand saves it as a new file in the Generative Creations folder.

You can move this photo to a different folder or add it to an Album. Most importantly, you can keep editing it with all the other tools present in Luminar Neo if you want to.

Inside GenExpand, there’s also a Cancel button right next to the Save one. You can use this to exit the tool without applying the edits.

• If you liked a previous iteration better, don’t click Cancel! Click the back arrow on the toolbar.
